Advanced feedback sensors and direct valve integration

Eaton has announced the launch of a new electrohydraulic (EH) cylinder featuring valve integration. The new product comprises a high-performance industrial cylinder, precision feedback transducer and control valve in one package to create a single-source solution which offers significant cost savings over custom assemblies.

“With our latest electrohydraulic cylinder, customers and distributors no longer need to buy and assemble multiple components,” said Andreas Kling, business development manager for power and controls products at Eaton. “Our new cylinder is a complete system with the customer’s valve of choice pre-mounted on the cylinder. By eliminating the need for separate manifolds, plumbing between control valves and cylinders, transducer mounting brackets and other complex arrangements, we’re providing the benefits of custom assemblies while reducing the complexity and cost.”

Eaton’s electrohydraulic cylinder offers reduced setup time, thanks to simplified plumbing and electrical connections, along with the programmability of the AxisPro valve, which eliminates repetitive set-ups. Users also benefit from waste elimination, as the infinite positioning with high repeatability can improve yield in the production cycle. Eaton asserts that another benefit is increased production, with the programmable motion control enabling faster cycles than conventional hydraulic circuitry. Eaton electrohydraulic cylinders are offered in NFPA tie rod, mill duty, welded or threaded styles, and are available with a range of mountings, bore sizes and rod diameters. An Eaton proportional, servo, directional control or AxisPro valve can be mounted onto the configured cylinder and adjusted to customer specifications. Typical applications include press manufacturing, alternative energy, forestry, civil engineering, oil and gas, processing and aerospace engineering.

The EH cylinder complements Eaton’s XL series of custom hydraulic cylinders. The XL series meet the needs of applications exposed to some of the world’s most brutal conditions, including offshore oil exploration, mining, mineral processing, and hydropower dams. A large selection of specialty rod coating options provides the perfect balance of wear and corrosion resistance to meet specific application requirements. Coating options include Eatonite laser cladding, metallic HVOF sprayed coatings, metal oxide plasma sprayed coating, nickel chromium and chromium.

These coating options proved key when the rod coating – specified by the system developer – began to crack and flake in the corrosive work environment of a customer’s exploratory oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Sorting the problem for the customer involved removing the original coating, performing prep work for the coating, applying Eatonite laser cladding, and shipping the 25,800 lb, 18ft long cylinders back to the Gulf for installation on the rig. Eatonite laser cladding was the first anti-corrosion coating technology to earn JIP Certification from DNV for use on offshore platforms. Suitable for offshore deep water oil and gas exploration and production, marine civil engineering, wave power and other heavy duty applications, Eatonite anti-corrosion laser classing can be applied to both new cylinders and refurbished applications.

In order to keep the rig operational, the customer shipped two or three cylinders at a time to Eaton for refurbishment, relying in the mean time on auxiliary cylinders to control riser tension systems. All 13 cylinders in the project were upgraded with Eatonite cladding.

XL series cylinders are available in bore sizes to 1,500mm and stroke lengths up to 22,000mm. Hydraulic ratings up to 10,000 psi/690 bar are available.
